'Are you a 90’s Baby?’
Not since Alicia Silverstone sashayed down the stairs in the LWD (little white dress) by Calvin Klein in Clueless have 90's dresses had such a moment. Spaghetti straps, straight silhouettes or bandeau styles, 90's dresses are back with a bang for spring and summer, bringing with them a plethora of styling possibilities.
The decade of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, TLC and the original supermodels is fraught with fashion moments worth their weight in gold which is why the era is experiencing a serious style renaissance. We had leather blazers, puffer jackets and oversized jeans for winter (not to mention those Adidas popper tracksuit trousers) so it was only fair that the warmer weather calls for the little 90's summer dress.
Thrown over a white tee a la Rachel and Monica or buttoned up with chunky boots like J-Lo, 90's dresses are the epitome of day-to-night styling with a distinct sexiness to their subtlety. Typically plain or with a ditsy youthful print, their throw-on-and-go quality is part of the charm and we have five designs that are begging for a daisy hair clip and some platform trainers.
OSCAR DE LA RENTA
Sure, the ball invitations may not be flowing right now but the beauty of the 90's dress is its ability to be styled up or down. Vibrant in colour but simple in design, De La Renta has created the ultimate ball gown with the classic 90's aesthetic in mind. But if you don't want to let your formal dresses go to waste, team with flat sandals and a cardigan for warm summer evenings.
Embellished Mini Dress
With an all-over embellished flower print, high hem and boat neckline, this LBD wouldn't have looked out of place on the likes of Drew Barrymore or Britney Spears back in the day. For a modern take on a classic, pair with chunky white trainers and a denim jacket or black slides and a cardigan for a sweet evening look.
Ultra Mini Dress
Spaghetti straps? Check. Short skirt? Check. Cinched in waist? Check. We're all ready to channel our inner Cher Horowitz with this little white dress from Blumarine. A keep-forever piece, it would look fit for the 90's paired with white Chanel sandals and a white shirt or strappy black heeled mules and matching handbag for a night on the town.
Embellished Tweed Dress
It may have been released in the 00's but there's a distinct hint of 90's icon Gwyneth Paltrow in The Royal Tenenbaums throughout this classic Gucci mini dress. Prim, proper with the brand's eponymous logo to the belted torso, it's raw hem and Peter Pan collar are on-trend for the sweet and innocent vibe of the decade. To add a little edge, wear with trainers and a leather jacket for daytime plans or Mary Janes and a blazer for an evening look.
With its drop waist, subtle pleating and bejewelled thin straps, this emerald green number from Gucci would've looked perfect hanging on Kate Moss's delicate frame on one of her famous night's out in the capital. As a fan of vintage dresses, the fashion icon would have loved this 1920's shape and understated, simple design paired with black heeled pumps and a clutch picked up from Portobello Market.
