The best fashion collaborations of all time

The Best Fashion Collaborations of All Time

A fashion collaboration is a collection two names design together. The most famous fashion collaborations mix the codes of both sides so well that the pieces become collectable. These are our five best fashion collabs. Together they cover iconic fashion collaborations through the decades, from Louis Vuitton and Supreme to Fendi and Versace, and what made each one stand out.

Gucci x Balenciaga Hacker Project bag

Gucci x Balenciaga: The Hacker Project

Gucci first showed The Hacker Project with Balenciaga inside its Aria collection in April 2021. Alessandro Michele and Demna mixed the two houses' signatures across ready-to-wear and accessories. A diagonal Balenciaga print ran across Gucci's Jackie 1961 bag, the City bag came in GG canvas, and the Triple S trainer picked up Gucci's Flora print. The project played with ideas of branding and copying, so it read as a comment on logos as much as a collection.

Louis Vuitton x Supreme

Louis Vuitton x Supreme

Louis Vuitton x Supreme was unveiled at the Louis Vuitton men's Autumn/Winter 2017 show, with Kim Jones as menswear artistic director. Supreme's logo sat next to the LV monogram on clothing, bags, scarves and trunk-style cases. It put a streetwear label on a Louis Vuitton runway, and for us the Supreme pairing is one of the best clothing collabs ever made.

Balenciaga x Crocs

Balenciaga x Crocs

Balenciaga x Crocs started with the platform Foam clog, shown at Paris Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2018 with Balenciaga charms. For Spring/Summer 2022, Balenciaga put the clog on a stiletto heel, in black, grey and bright green. The 2018 platform was widely criticised on social media, and the 2022 heel drew plenty of attention there too.

Fendace, Fendi x Versace

Fendace: Fendi x Versace

Fendace was a swap rather than a standard collaboration. At a show in Milan on 26 September 2021, Kim Jones, then at Fendi, presented a collection he designed for Versace, and Donatella Versace presented one she designed for Fendi, each with full access to the other house's archive. On the Fendi Baguette, the FF monogram was merged with Versace's Greek key, and a cast of supermodels walked the show.

Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami

Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami

Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami began in 2002, when Marc Jacobs asked Takashi Murakami to rework the monogram. The first result was Monogram Multicolore, shown for Spring/Summer 2003, with the monogram printed in 33 colours on white or black canvas. Cherry Blossom, Cerises and the camouflage-print Monogramouflage followed. The Monogram Multicolore line was discontinued in 2015.

Best fashion collaborations

What are the best fashion collaborations of all time?

The best fashion collaborations of all time, in our view, are Louis Vuitton x Supreme, Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami, Fendace, Gucci x Balenciaga and Balenciaga x Crocs. Each one brought the signatures of two names together.

Which brands are known for the best designer collaborations and limited-edition collections?

Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Gucci, Fendi and Versace are the fashion brands behind the designer collaborations on this list. Louis Vuitton appears twice, with Supreme and with Takashi Murakami, and Balenciaga twice, with Gucci and with Crocs.

What are the best designer outfits from collabs?

The best designer outfits from collabs pair one standout collaboration piece with simple designer clothing. A Louis Vuitton x Supreme piece works with tailored trousers, and a Murakami bag with a plain black dress, so the collaboration stays the focus.
