Who owns Alaïa?

Richemont owns the Alaïa brand, having bought the Parisian couture house in 2007. Alaïa is a Paris couture house founded by the designer Azzedine Alaïa, who was born in Tunis in 1935 and moved to Paris in 1956. His first atelier was on rue de Bellechasse, and he began working on knitwear with Silvia Bocchese in 1979. In 1987 he bought a building on rue de la Verrerie for his home, workshop and shows. The Prada group invested in Maison Alaïa from 2000 to 2002, before Richemont took over.

The house describes its ballet flats as inspired by classical Japanese shoes, cut in fishnet textile with patent leather and a buckle strap. For the Alaïa fishnet flats, the maker's own sizing note reads "We recommend taking half size down". Le Teckel and Le Mina sit among the house's bag lines, with the Mina made in perforated Vienne calfskin or nubuck.
